PIPER WAITED FRANTICALLY inside the cab of the old truck as Donovan rushed, placing everything he could think of into the truck bed. Sleeping bags, a gear bag full of accessories that rattled around, sacks of whatever food he could round up and, most importantly, gasoline. One at a time, Donovan hoisted large red jugs of gasoline onto the truck.

“Last trip... be ready!” he shouted.

Quickly, like some sort of looting thief in the middle of a riot, Donovan put shoes to gravel – entering his house for the last time. Piper waited – it's all she could do. The heretics were close. She'd heard their thunder of war enough to know that, much like an approaching storm, they were nearly on top of them.

“Go!” Donovan shouted.

He was dozens of feet away from the house, yet he motioned Piper to start hauling ass in the truck. Which she was reluctant to do.

Moments later, a hulking mechanical beast exited the home and began spraying its weapon into Donovan's direction. Flat rounds, presumably made of some sort of alien metal, began chewing into one of his old cars. Luckily Donovan had the wherewithal to duck behind the large rusting pile of steel only seconds before. Piper had seen plenty of the aliens on paper, but never face-to-face. It was nearly twice Donovan's height and plenty more stout. The construction of its body was simple, almost skeletal. Though bone had been replaced with a metal that neither of them had seen before. Splashes of silver and black with a pulsing red color directly beneath its breastplate.

Donovan drew in a deep breath – still wearing his Lakers hat. Then, springing from cover, he began firing the rifle Piper had crashed with. It felt very much like firing any Ruger hunting rifle he'd ever fired, but the slugs hit the mechanical creature with a pop and sizzle. Slowing the artificial beast down considerably. It fired back and Donovan ducked for cover. All he could think about was a cold winter's day with ice sickles falling to the ground. The heretics weapon sounded eerily similar.

Once again, he sprang from cover and began firing at the large robot. Finally, his assault became more of a desperate sprint from the house – blind firing the rifle behind him as he sprinted to the truck.

“Get going!”

It took Piper a minute to figure out.

Slide over and drive!

Grabbing hold of the steering wheel, Piper slammed her foot to the gas as hard as she possibly could. She would have worried about leaving Donovan, had he not dived into the truck's bed and leaned the rifle back onto the tailgate. Skimming the area.

What had been one heretic now seemed like a house overrun – he counted 7 of the murdering fiends. Firing a handful of shots from his rifle, most found a home. Knocking one of the heretics back and seeming to put it down and out of commission.

Donovan took several moments to regain a normal breath. His legs shook and most of all, he'd survived his first heretic encounter.
